| Friction The Rockbrake® range comprises engineered fibres specially developed for the friction industry as a number of products with various fibre lengths, shot contents and surface treatments. These versatile fibres are inorganic and heat-resistant up to 1000 °C, making them suitable for both low and heavy-duty friction applications. The unique characteristics of Rockbrake® products provide a positive contribution to various properties of the end products. All Rockbrake® products are based on the bio-soluble Roxul®1000 fibre chemistry. Ever since the first generation of non-asbestos organic (NAO) commercial vehicle linings, Rockbrake® fibres have been an important raw material within this application. Asbestos fibres cannot be replaced by only one other fibre while maintaining the desired properties, but require a fibre cocktail consisting of a combination of organic and inorganic fibres. Rockbrake® products are an important part of this fibre cocktail, enhancing the final product in numerous ways. In low-steel disc pad applications, Rockbrake® fibres are often used in combination with steel fibres. Like steel fibres, Rockbrake® fibres have a high thermal stability, making them ideal for high performance applications. Rockbrake® fibres have a high melting temperature resulting in a stable friction coefficient over a wide temperature range. Due to their moisture and corrosion resistance, Rockbrake® fibres also reduce the risk of corrosion and early morning sickness. Moan and groan can also be reduced compared to steel fibres. Due to their low abrasive nature, Rockbrake® fibres also cause less rotor wear compared to steel fibres which in turn reduces wheel dusting. Concern about noise and wheel dusting means brake manufacturers are looking increasingly towards Rockbrake®. Extreme Low Shot fibres in NAO/non-steel (also known as ceramic) formulations for passenger vehicle disc pads. Extreme Low Shot fibres are particularly attractive for these high-performance applications.
